Ingredients

  • Pork Shoulder (or Pork Butt) – 4 lbs (This cut has the right balance of fat and tenderness.)
  • Brown Sugar – 2 tbsp (Adds a hint of sweetness and caramelization.)
  • Chili Powder – 1 tbsp (Brings warmth and depth to the seasoning.)
  • Garlic Powder – 1 tbsp (Essential for a savory, well-rounded flavor.)
  • Cumin – 1 tsp (Adds a slightly smoky, earthy taste.)
  • Salt & Black Pepper – To taste (Enhances all the flavors.)
  • Coke or Apple Cider Vinegar Mix – 1 cup (Tenderizes the meat and balances flavors.)

Optional Ingredients for Extra Flavor:

  • BBQ Sauce – Mix in after shredding for a smoky, tangy finish.
  • Liquid Smoke – A small amount can give that authentic smoked flavor.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Adds a tangy kick to balance the richness.
  • Cayenne or Smoked Paprika – If you like a bit of heat.

These ingredients ensure your 1/2 lb of pulled pork per person is tender, flavorful, and perfect for any meal!

Instructions

  1. Trim and Prep: Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and cut it into four pieces.
  2. Season: Mix brown sugar, chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Rub it generously over the pork. Let it sit overnight for best results.
  3. Sear (Optional): Brown the pork in a hot skillet for extra depth of flavor.
  4. Choose Cooking Method:
    • Oven: Bake at 300°F for 3-5 hours, covering for the first 3 hours.
    • Slow Cooker: Cook on LOW for 8 hours or HIGH for 4-5 hours.
    • Instant Pot: Pressure cook for 70 minutes, then naturally release for 15 minutes.
  5. Shred and Serve: Use two forks to pull apart the pork and mix with juices for extra flavor.

Notes

  • Substitutions: Swap Coke for apple cider vinegar mixed with apple juice for a tangy twist.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container for 3 days in the fridge or freeze for 3 months.

  • Reheating: Use the oven, slow cooker, or microwave with added liquid to keep it juicy.
