Description

This quick and easy pepper steak recipe combines juicy, tender beef with vibrant bell peppers in a savory soy-based glaze. It’s perfect for weeknight dinners or when you’re craving healthier homemade takeout.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large bell peppers (red, yellow, or green), sliced into strips
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ lbs flank steak, sliced thinly against the grain
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch, dissolved in cold water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for stir-frying
  • Green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep: Slice the steak thinly against the grain. Cut the bell peppers into uniform strips, chop the onion, and mince the garlic.
  2. Marinate: Combine soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil. Add the steak, coat evenly, and marinate for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Cook Vegetables: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok or large pan. Sauté the bell peppers and onions until slightly charred. Set aside.
  4. Sear Steak: Heat remaining oil and sear the steak strips on high heat in batches to achieve caramelization. Set aside.
  5. Make Sauce: Deglaze the pan with soy sauce and water. Add honey and oyster sauce. Stir in the cornstarch slurry to thicken.
  6. Combine: Return the steak and veggies to the pan and toss to coat with the sauce. Garnish and serve.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce.
  • Optional: Add chili garlic sauce for a bit of heat.
  • Best served with steamed jasmine or basmati rice.
